NYC Matcha Spots
- Ippodo at Kajitsu My Japanese lunch favorite also has the only U.S. location of my favorite Kyoto teamakers. Worth the trip for an authentic matcha — and the slushie in hot weather — plus beautiful teas, gear, even lessons.
- Kettl If you’ve ever waited for breakfast at Okonomi, you’ve shopped at Zach Magnan’s supremely chill tea boutique upstairs. In addition to selling beautiful teas, ceramics, whisks, and more, Kettl is also a great place to learn. And if you ask nicely, Zach might whisk you a bowl. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Chalait One of the first NYC matcha cafes, and still one of the best. I stock up on their ceremonial blend and matcha-to-go packets and grab a latte, frothed with house almond-macadamia milk, to go from the Hudson Square location. That is, when I’m not sitting down to the toast with miso butter.
- Jack’s Stir Brew I’m not big on the Jack’s cult, but their matcha, sourced from the experts at In Pursuit of Tea, is consistently excellent. So I’ll shut up.
- Matchaful pop-up Though the “Farm to Whisk™” motto signifies endtimes, the hot chocolate matcha that I tried with chaga mushroom powder and coconut oil was a great way to greet them. Next time, I’ll add a shot of CBD tincture. Pop-ups in Dumbo and Soho through February.
And the runners-up… Setsugekka … Cha-An Teahouse… Interlude … and Office Coffee for their sick latte art, shown above …
